The elevators must be balanced to prevent flutter below VNE and then some. Of course where VNE is will come down to flight testing. The plans have it at 190knots. I’m going to need it higher so I’d better get my ducks in a row before testing.
I had previously build a couple of knife edges for this balance test. There are instructions from Mike Melvill on balancing the elevators for the Roncz canard which is a little different from the GU canard in the plans.
You can see with the pin and hardware installed its all good.
Here’s how it goes. Interestingly the other side was much more positive so its good to see this one still in balance. In short we want the trailing edge up and the leading edge down. It end s up that way meaning the weight is forward of the elevator pivot point.
