This is a little modification that may work instead of the arrow stock at the back of the canopy. I currently have a bulkhead here instead, but thats on borrowed time.
This is not my idea but in an old CP. I have modified it a little, otherwise you’d be disappointed. The idea is that you have pins that locate the canopy in the longerons so it doesn’t move around in flight and always closes in the same position.
Here are two oil impregnated bushings I knew I had in a box somewhere but for the life of me I can’t remember why I bought them or what they are for. I hope I don’t find out as they have now been used here.
I drilled holes for the bushings in the longerons about 2″ from the turtleback end I think. Then grabbed a couple of short AN4 bolts and ground off the threads and had about 3/8″ good until a taper to a point. I next epoxied in the bushings, covered with grey release tape and popped the bolts into position as you see above.
I had drilled out opposite where the inserts went with a 1/2″ drill. I filled the hole with flox added some tape and closed the canopy for the cure. Above is the result and it only took a small amount of force to open the canopy. The grey duct tape did its job as a release agent.
Here we have the bolt head now floxed into the canopy rail and aligned with the bushing after the initial clean up.
Here we have the canopy about to close and the bolt and receiving bush perfectly aligned. A very simple easy modification, …..for a change.
