Over several days I made all the pant parts – again.
Yes I’d bought a set of ‘James Pants’ and my friend Michael had made those nice blue molds up. I thought I could make them a little lighter. Well that set ended up on someone else’s Long-EZ. They were 3 ply and yes a bit lighter. Yes, and I said all this in the last post!
The next set I made was thinking I again could make them lighter and stronger. I was wrong, they turned out very well but only a bit lighter. I used S glass BID and a new tough glass fabric. Again 3 ply. Again see the last post….
Then a very experienced EZ driver told me he had make his pants with only two plies of BID plus reinforcement. So this is what I have done. They are 2lbs 5 oz lighter!! That’s a real saving so far. …but hey they are very soft and not very stiff.
I’m continuing on with the idea of stiffening them up with a few straws and things as required once they come together.
These pants took a while. I had to get the molds prepped with clay filler, wax and my hair spray release. Tick tock. While only 2 plies it was still a lot of glass and time. I skipped the peel ply and will just sand where I need to join. I did all the layups on foil this time. They are perhaps a little on the dry side but I was going for absolute minimum weight given this is not a structural layup.
Lots of glass and prep
Curing in the molds
Easily popped out
