There is a nice RAM mount ball below the IP for my iPad mini. Installed and done, or so I thought.
There were some issues.
That pad is really filling my tight cockpit area and it is always going to have reflections as I need it very flat so the panel is still visually accessible. I needed a Plan B.
What if I could mount the iPad up on the left side, like they do for the left seat in a Boeing or Airbus? It would be out of the way but reasonably accessible. Yes, the other side would might better but I have the compass in that position.
With some regret I have had to give up my beautiful and very functional wooden canopy handle. I have remade a RAM ball mount and drilled for a long bolt. It is also incorporated into the canopy latch seat. I’ve changed out the round head screw here for an AN3 bolt after cutting the thread a little longer. Goodbye old rosewood handle.
The new combined canopy handle and iPad mount is not fantastic to grab onto. I will work out a technique and probably won’t notice it after a while as an issue. This new pad position is a huge problem solver and space saver.
(3 days later) So I had a rethink and got the old handle back on. The latch section needs a slight tweak but we have proof of concept. It turns out that where the iPad mount goes for viewing does not create the interference problem I thought was there. A little win!
Taken through the canopy protective plastic you can still see how it sits.
The pad can be moved around quite a bit for sun reflection issues and it now has a ball air vent right behind it for cooling. OK for once I got lucky. The impact on outside vision is minimal. I have left the old ball mount above the wheel view window for who knows what.
Of course the new problem is getting power to it without a long lead dangling. It’s always something.
